The Department of Socio-Economic and Political Geography was established at TSU in 1923, and was transformed in 2000 into the Department of Human Geography. In 2005 it joined the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. The Department of Human Geography has made an importabt contribution to educating generations of Georgians who work in diplomatic missions and the public sector.

The Department of Human Geography began the first complex research programs concerning countries in the Middle East. Students are offered all three degree programs through lectures and seminars, as well as field practice. They are assisted in securing internships within relevant organizations and encouraged to attend a wide diversity of courses such as geographic information systems; regional geography; demography; cartography; geo-urbanism; geopolitics and conflict geography; as well as economic and tourism geography.

The Department of Human Geography offers the only MA program in Demography in Georgia. Given the significant demographic issues the country faces, this program provides an opportunity for scientific study of the issue.
